Lawn Mower

Best Lawn Mowers: Petrol, Corded, Cordless, Robotic and Reel — Compared for Every Lawn

Most lawn mower buying guides pick one power type and pretend it fits everyone. It does not. A flat 3,000-square-foot lawn, a half-acre with slopes, and a warm-season reel lawn need different decks, drives and runtimes — and the site’s own cluster already proves it, with 1,606 Lawn Mower posts but no general pillar to hold them together.

This guide is that pillar. It compares petrol/gas, corded electric, cordless battery, robotic and push/reel mowers together, using only models, specs and facts actually found in Gardening Pleasure niche posts. Every price carries its check date, and any spec that could not be verified is marked “Not stated” — never guessed. If you already know your lawn size, read the comparison table first. If you are still choosing a power type, start with the Best Cordless Lawn Mower deep-dive, then read the sections below.

What is the best lawn mower overall?

For most lawns, the best lawn mower overall is a cordless battery walk-behind mower, not a single model. It starts with a button, needs no fuel or oil, and covers small to medium lawns quietly. Choose a wider, self-propelled version for larger lawns, and a robot or petrol model only where automation or tall, rough grass demands it.

Cordless picks are the strongest general case in this guide: the Casince 17-inch (up to 40 min, about 5,380 sq ft per charge), the Greenworks 40V, 60V and 80V models (16 to 21 inches), the Litheli 14-inch (up to 30 min, up to 3,000 sq ft) and the Casince 13-inch (up to 40 min, about 3,230 sq ft). No single model wins for every lawn — the 80V self-propelled is the large-lawn cordless example here, and the 13-inch Casince is the small-lawn example. A robot wins only where hands-off mowing matters, and petrol only where tall, rough grass or very large areas exceed battery runtime. This guide does not name a single overall model winner until prices and the remaining spec cells are verified.

Which lawn mower is best for a small lawn?

For a small lawn, choose a light push mower with a 13- to 17-inch deck, because a narrow deck fits gates and beds and a lighter body is easier to turn and store. The Casince 13-inch cordless, at 10 kg, and the Litheli 14-inch cordless are the verified small-lawn examples, while manual reels suit flat, maintained turf.

The Casince 13-inch (10 kg, 30L bag, about 3,230 sq ft per charge) fits tight spaces, and the Litheli 14-inch (just over 14 kg, 9-gallon bag, up to 3,000 sq ft) suits small, quick cuts. The LawnMaster LMRM1801 and Earthwise 1715-16EW manual reels suit small, level, maintained lawns. The WORX robot (1/4 acre) is an automation option, not a push option. For more small-yard picks, see the automatic mowers for small yards under $500 roundup.

Which lawn mower is best for a large lawn?

For a large lawn, choose a wide, self-propelled cordless mower or a wire-free robot rated well above your lawn size, because width cuts passes and drive reduces pushing effort. The Greenworks 80V 21-inch self-propelled covers up to 1/3 acre per the manufacturer (LM2138S), while the LOPKIN robot claims 0.9 acres and 200 minutes, so size and runtime must be checked together.

The large-yard post’s rule: acreage claims are optimistic, so subtract 20–30% for typical suburban lots — if you have half an acre, buy a mower rated at least 0.7 acres. Verified large examples: the Greenworks 80V LM2138S (up to 1/3 acre, rear-wheel variable-speed drive, steel deck, 4-year tool and battery warranty) and the LOPKIN (0.9-acre claim, up to 200 min claimed, multi-zone, no boundary wire). The PowerSmart 18-inch gas mower is the large-area fallback for tall grass — push-only, with fuel maintenance. See the large-yard mowers under $300 roundup and the guide to mowing steep hills.

Petrol vs battery vs corded: which should I choose?

Petrol suits tall, rough grass and very large areas but needs fuel, oil and more noise and maintenance; cordless battery suits most suburban lawns for quiet, one-button starts, limited by runtime; corded electric suits small lawns near an outlet with unlimited runtime, and its verified pick in this guide is the LawnMaster MEB1114K (see the table).

Petrol: the PowerSmart 144cc, 18-inch steel deck, side discharge plus mulching, 1.5–3.9 in in 5 positions — heavier and noisier, with oil and spark-plug maintenance. Cordless: one-button starts, no fuel or oil, quiet, with hard runtime limits (up to 30 min for the Litheli and Walensee, up to 40 min for both Casince models, up to 200 min claimed for the LOPKIN robot). Corded: the MEB1114K, verified from the Zoysia grass push mower post, with unlimited runtime while plugged in — limited by cord and outlet distance. For petrol picks, see the petrol mowers with roller for small yards roundup.

What size mower do I need for my lawn?

Match deck and coverage to lawn area, not to the biggest mower you can buy. Use a 13- to 14-inch deck for narrow strips and small lawns up to about 3,000 square feet, a 17- to 21-inch deck for medium lawns, and a 21-inch self-propelled or a robot rated above your lawn size for a half-acre lawn.

Size bands from the table: 13-inch Casince, about 3,230 sq ft; 14-inch Litheli, up to 3,000 sq ft; 17-inch Casince, about 5,380 sq ft — medium flat yards up to about 5,000 sq ft; WORX robot, 1/4 acre; Greenworks 80V LM2138S, up to 1/3 acre; LOPKIN, 0.9-acre claim. Apply the discount rule: subtract 20–30%, and for a half-acre buy at least a 0.7-acre rating. Check gate width and storage too: a 21-inch deck does not fit every gate, and the 13-inch is the narrow-yard specialist.

How much does a lawn mower cost to run?

A mower’s running cost is not its purchase price alone; it includes electricity or fuel, blades, batteries and servicing over time. Use the site’s Lawn Mower Running Cost Calculator to compare those inputs for your lawn size and fuel or electricity price, because no verified monthly running-cost figure was found in the niche posts used for this guide.

The large-yard post warns that a $300 mower can become a $500 mower with consumables — a warning, not a model price. Cordless mowers cost electricity plus eventual battery replacement; petrol mowers cost fuel, oil and spark plugs; manual reels cost sharpening time and effort, with almost nothing to break; robots cost blades plus connectivity and app setup, with no fuel or oil. No total-cost-of-ownership figure is given here.

What should I check before buying a lawn mower?

Before buying, check deck size against gates and storage, drive type against slopes and lawn size, weight against who will push it, discharge options against whether you mulch, bag or side-discharge, and warranty terms for tool and battery. Confirm cutting-height range and runtime or coverage for your grass type, because those two figures decide whether one charge finishes your lawn.

  • Deck: 13 in to 21 in — measure your narrowest gate.
  • Drive: push vs. self-propelled rear-wheel variable speed (Greenworks 80V) vs. autonomous robot (WORX, LOPKIN).
  • Weight: verified only for the Casince 13-inch (10 kg), Casince 17-inch (14 kg), Litheli (just over 14 kg) and Sun Joe (under 30 lb); others Not stated.
  • Discharge: Greenworks 60V verified 4-in-1, Greenworks 40V 2-in-1, PowerSmart side discharge plus mulching only; others Not stated.
  • Cutting height: verified ranges include Walensee 0.67–1.77 in, Sun Joe 0.6–2.0 in, Earthwise 0.5–2.5 in and PowerSmart 1.5–3.9 in; others Not stated.
  • Battery/engine: volts, amp-hours or cc — and whether you need a second battery.
  • Warranty: verified for Greenworks 40V (3-year limited) and Greenworks 80V (4-year tool and battery); others Not stated.
  • Slope: do not buy a robot for a steep lawn on a title claim alone — verify the manufacturer spec. See the steep-hill mowing guide.

How do I maintain a lawn mower?

Maintain a mower by cleaning the deck and bag after each cut, keeping blades sharp, checking height, wheels and battery or engine before the season, and winterizing fuel or storing batteries as the manufacturer directs. Reel mowers need frequent sharpening and regular mowing, while robots need boundary, sensor and blade checks, not fuel or oil changes.

By type: cordless — the Litheli’s zero-maintenance brushless motor claim applies to that model only, and is not generalised to petrol mowers here. Petrol — the PowerSmart needs oil and spark-plug maintenance. Manual reels — keep blades sharp, mow frequently (twice a week in peak growth), and mow before grass exceeds 4 inches for a reel cut. Robots — allow mapping time (a couple of cycles for the WORX, about 20 minutes for the first LOPKIN mapping), plus sensor and blade checks, including blade speed under load and battery fade. For reel mowers in tough conditions, see the electric reel mowers for thick grass guide.

Our top recommendation

Our top recommendation is a cordless battery walk-behind mower for most suburban lawns, with the Greenworks 80V 21-inch self-propelled as the large-lawn example and the Casince 13-inch as the small-lawn example in this guide. Do not buy a cordless walk-behind if your lawn is very large, steep or rough and tall, where a robot, self-propelled or petrol model fits better.

This fits a suburban lawn up to about half an acre, flat to gently sloped, mowed regularly — quiet, one-button starting, no fuel maintenance. Who should not buy it: very large lawns beyond a single charge (where the LOPKIN’s claimed 200 minutes, or petrol for tall, rough grass, fits better); steep lawns (verify robot slope specs first); warm-season lawns kept very short, where a reel’s scissor cut is the goal (Earthwise 0.5–2.5 in, Walensee 0.67–1.77 in); small lawns with no charging or storage space for a 21-inch deck (the 13-inch Casince at 10 kg or the 14-inch Litheli instead). No price-based “best value” claim is made here, because not all prices are verified.

Buying guide summary

  1. Measure first: lawn area, narrowest gate, steepest slope, storage space.
  2. Choose power type second: cordless for most suburban lawns; petrol for tall, rough grass; robot for hands-off mowing; manual reel for short, maintained, warm-season turf; corded — the MEB1114K is the verified pick.
  3. Choose deck and drive third: 13–14 in for narrow and small lawns, 17–21 in for medium and large, self-propelled or robot for large or sloped lawns.
  4. Check the missing cells fourth: price with as-of date, runtime/coverage, height range, discharge, weight, warranty — “Not stated” cells are not guessed.
  5. Price the whole life, not just the box: blades, batteries, fuel and oil, servicing.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I mow, and at what height?

Mow as often as your grass and mower type require — not on a fixed calendar. Reel examples: thick Bermuda or Zoysia every 4–5 days (Walensee), twice a week in peak growth (Sun Joe, Earthwise). Height ranges run from 0.5 in (Earthwise) at the low end to 3.9 in (PowerSmart) at the high end, with most cordless walk-behinds in the 1–3 in band. This guide does not publish a single universal mowing height.

Can one mower mulch, bag and side-discharge?

Only the Greenworks 60V is verified as 4-in-1 (mulch, bag, side discharge, turbo leaf mode). The Greenworks 40V is 2-in-1 only; the PowerSmart is side discharge plus mulching only; for the others, discharge options are Not stated.

Is a self-propelled mower worth it?

It is worth it where pushing effort is the problem: large lawns, slopes and heavier decks. The verified example is the Greenworks 80V LM2138S with rear-wheel variable-speed drive, rated up to 1/3 acre by the manufacturer. No verified price comparison between push and self-propelled versions of the same model was found, so no “worth the extra cost” figure is given. On a small, flat lawn, a light push mower like the 10 kg Casince 13-inch may be the better buy.

How long does a cordless mower battery last?

Per charge: the Litheli up to 30 min, the Walensee up to 30 min, both Casince models up to 40 min, and the LOPKIN robot up to 200 min claimed. The Greenworks 40V is rated by coverage (up to 1/3 acre), and the Greenworks 80V LM2138S likewise (up to 1/3 acre) — not by minutes. Battery life over years is flagged as something to check; no verified years figure was found. Treat runtimes as ceilings: runtime drops on wet or tall grass.

What is the difference between a robotic and a push mower?

A robotic mower mows autonomously: it maps the lawn, takes zones and no-go areas from the app, returns to charge, and needs no pushing. The WORX Landroid Vision is wire-free with RTK Cloud and Vision AI, app zones and no-go areas, for 1/4 acre; the LOPKIN is wire-free with NetRTK and AI Vision, multi-zone, with a 0.9-acre claim and 200 min claimed. A push mower is steered and pushed by you on every cut — cordless, petrol or manual reel. Robots trade setup and mapping time for hands-off cutting; push mowers trade effort for direct control and lower setup — and manual reels need no battery or fuel at all.

Methodology and evidence note

This guide was assembled from Gardening Pleasure niche posts that were actually read for it. No hands-on testing was performed for this pillar itself. Testing language belongs to the source niche posts, quoted as their claims — not as verified independent testing: the cordless post claims “I tested five cordless models across Casince and Greenworks”; the large-yard automatic post claims “I tested five models that fit the sub-$300 sweet spot”, including checks of blade speed under load, battery fade and replacement costs; the thick-grass reel post says mowers were “put through real-world conditions”. Those claims are not repeated here as if this guide’s author tested the models.

Manufacturer claims are flagged where the source attributes them: Greenworks 60V output “matching a 150cc gas mower”, Greenworks 80V “3x quieter than gas”, and the LOPKIN’s Wi-Fi HaLow range and 60 dB. No owner-review aggregation was verified, so no owner-review claim is made.

Prices were checked on 2026-11-01: 9 of 14 models have a verified price with its as-of date in the table; 5 carry the honest wording “Price not published at checked retailers on 2026-11-01 – check retailer”. The large-yard post’s “under $300” grouping and its “$300 mower can become a $500 mower” consumables warning are not model prices.
